But how did this area get its unusual name? We hear you ask. Well, the name dates back to 1612 as ‘Piccadilly’ refers to a tailor named Roger Baker who lived in the area and sold many piccadils or as you might recognise them, white elaborate Shakespeare type collars. In terms of the circus part - this area was once shaped in a ring. 'Circus' is a Latin word for ring or circle and although the space is more of a square now, its original name remains.

Easily reached on the London Underground, Piccadilly Circus is located in the West End, in the city of Westminster. With its several popular landmarks and attractions, it is easy to understand how it is one of the busiest junctions in London.
